Why Sabbatical Travel Leaves You Refreshed

Sabbatical travel can leave a high-achieving professional feeling refreshed, because taking time out to explore the world when our minds are simply full of work can open up new possibilities, opportunities and solutions not previously noticed.

Break from Routine and Stress

Who doesn’t need a break?

So when high-achieving professionals who often have demanding schedules, work in high-pressure environments daily, and hold numerous responsibilities decide that something has to give. A sabbatical can offer a break from the daily grind. It allows for creativity to grow and an expose to change enables a period of rest and recuperation, reducing stress levels significantly. Yet you have to learn to switch off quickly before you go to ensure that the sabbatical break you take can be harnessed for maximum effect during your trip and this skill can be developed before the scheduled break so you can make the most of it whilst there.

A break from a daily routine provides an opportunity to relax and recharge, leading to a refreshed mind and body.

Mental and Emotional Rejuvenation

I qualified as a Humanistic Therapist back in 2005 and since then I’ve worked with many clients and dealt with a lot of stress and poorly developed coping mechanisms. I’ve also spent a year outside of the UK myself travelling with husband and children and know the value of purposeful travel.

Traveling to new places exposes individuals, couples and families to different cultures, environments, and experiences. It kicks back into gear the trust inside, where you as a person can only follow your gut as sometimes in a different language speaking countries that is all you have. Reaching out and trusting others is needed but you learn about others through the process which can all be helpful when you’re healing from a broken heart or have been damaged through a relationship breakdown. Sabbatical travel can stimulate the mind, foster creativity, and provide new perspectives. The novelty and excitement of exploring new destinations can increase dopamine levels, serotonin and adrenalin. You don’t have to jump off buildings to get a high. Simply being somewhere new, different with people you don’t know and a language you don’t understand can provide that for you. Delivering a more positive psychology with which to deal with all matter of professional stresses on your return. You don’t need take on the task (another task) of boosting mood and emotional well-being because travel does that for you and this is something which is often diminished in a high-stress work environment.

Physical Health Benefits

Many of the High-achieving professionals I’ve worked with have neglected physical health due to their busy schedules. Not finding or making time for exercise because of a lack of interest or time. Yet part of the fun of exercising is finding the very thing which floats your boat. Sabbatical travel and exploration on daytrips often involves physical activities such as hiking, walking, or engaging in an outdoor activity like a water based trip with swimming involved, which can help improve physical fitness and overall health. Maybe experiencing something new helps you find an activity back in the location where you live to help with exercising. A client I had learnt through the process that he needed to structure an activity first thing in the morning to include exercise within the day and I myself have dipped into the cool waters of my shoreline this morning. Knowing it to be a great way to stimulate me and start the new week and day with a smile on my face, Adrenalin running through my body due to the chill of the temperate waters and dopamine in my brain kicked into gear. Additionally, the relaxation associated with travel can enhance sleep quality and reduce the risk of burnout. There are so many benefits to travel if utilised properly and a well thought out plan which provides both structure and freedom if put in place is a useful tool which will lead to less thinking and more doing.

Opportunity for Reflection and Personal Growth

A sabbatical provides time for introspection and self-assessment. Professionals can reflect on their career goals, personal aspirations, and life choices without the distractions of everyday work. Turning off social media and tuning into natures vibe is a significant benefit. This can lead to personal growth, a renewed sense of purpose, and a clearer vision for the future.

Skill Development and Learning

Traveling can also be an educational experience. Professionals might learn new languages, gain cultural insights, or develop new skills that can be valuable in their personal and professional lives. This continuous learning and growth can be invigorating and contribute to a feeling of refreshment. When we travelled for a year we would come across different places which we didn’t want to move through immediately. Some places we moved on in a day if it wasn’t right and that is so much harder living in your own country. To be able to shift quickly in a way which is healthy for you enables an element of control to be given, yet deciding to rest and allow a place to engage with you on a deeper level provides something more enriching and fulfilling to you as a person and a group.

Strengthened Relationships

I loved the way travelling for a year with my husband and children allowed me to feel. The and joy as a parent in watching your children evolve and grow as individuals in their own right and with their own interests on the path is special indeed. Traveling with family or friends can strengthen personal relationships, providing emotional support and deepening bonds. Stronger personal relationships can improve overall happiness and well-being, contributing to a sense of refreshment and fulfillment. Enrichment is key here, if all you do is move on a surface level and not engage your brain. Then you will not experience anything new. It is the depth which creates the nuanced experience.

Detachment and Perspective

Being away from the usual work environment allows professionals to gain a new perspective on their jobs and personal lives. It gives time for evaluation of what is important. This detachment can lead to a more balanced view of work-related challenges and opportunities, fostering a more positive and refreshed outlook upon return. The difference I think is that we still need a defined break and the responsibility of that is on our shoulders as a species. TBH I think the way the world had it arranged is pretty darn good and the influx of online and social media can only offer something to a certain group of workers. It does not offer the change people seek necessarily just provides another tool to access to decide on how to do it.

Unstructured Time and Freedom

High-achieving professionals often have highly structured and scheduled lives. Sabbatical travel offers unstructured time and the freedom to pursue activities at one’s own pace. This autonomy can be liberating and can rejuvenate the spirit, providing a much-needed mental break from the disciplined routine and this is so important. As a professional, it is important to remember that you were a person first. Be You. Travel wants that from you.

Overall, sabbatical travel offers a comprehensive break that addresses mental, emotional, physical, and social well-being, leaving you as a high-achieving professional feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. How you are going to take this trip and what you are trying to achieve from an extended element of travel. Something transformational. Time to process grief and gain healing. A little self discovery. A time to do a little of what you fancy to do you good. There are many reasons you may decide on a sabbatical.
