5 Simple Steps For A Mini Sabbatical

A mini sabbatical is a shorter version of a traditional sabbatical, typically ranging from a few weeks to a few months, rather than a year or more.

It is designed to provide individuals with a break from their regular work or daily routines to focus on personal development, skill acquisition, creative projects, or rest and rejuvenation.

Some of the High Achievers I’ve worked with have taken time out on a sabbatical to help them come back to work refreshed and renewed as an individual. Many clients I’ve worked with have gone past that point of needing and taking a break and instead have moved into burnout and the misuse of drugs and alcohol to keep them going, which have then caused a detrimental effect and this is where a break has been forced on them. It’s like a part of who they are which won’t let go is forced into letting go by another part of the self.

I myself travelled for a year and it has changed me forever and encouraged me to include travel as part of my life rather than something to be used simply for holiday purposes. I prefer a break with a purpose.

E.G: Planning a Mini Sabbatical. Currently I’m looking at taking a period of time out to travel and scuba dive. I want to go at an optimal time for me. Scuba Diving in crystal clear waters of Bimini combined with cheaper flights to Florida is my thinking.

1. Develop a clear objective.

2. When is the optimal time to take this trip and where to go to support your clear objective.

As I’m currently self employed I don’t need to think about employers or what I need to do to take the time off. Yet my husband needs to think about these things when we travel together.

3. How to take time off. Be sure to explain the benefits and plus points to your employer and take into account the company attitude and how long you’ve been with them.

For a month long sabbatical, you may be able to afford the break in a similar way to which you would a holiday but for longer periods you need a clear understanding of what it might cost, what you’ll need and what you intend to come back too.

4. Organise your responsibilities and figure out who and what needs handling whilst your away. New Zealand is a long way away to be dealing with anything day to day in the UK. Yet I have faith in you to deal with the unexpected.

5. Creating a schedule can help. In your mind, online, in print. Something which provides focus and structure.

When we travelled for a year it was the round the world ticket which provided me with structure and the adventure in between which gave the freedom. For me, I found that structure helpful. Yet expect the unexpected within yourself as travel can do that too. It can be a precursor in change creation and lifestyle redesign.

A mini sabbatical can be a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, providing a well-needed break that allows individuals to return to their routine refreshed and with a new perspective.
